"Who Are You, Really?"

by Dave Scarbrough

Have you ever asked yourself who you are, really? I assume if you ask most people who they are they will likely respond by saying they are whatever their occupation is, or they may identify as some other role they play in life, such as mother or father. However, I tend to think we are so much more than what are our roles in life tell us about who we are. If this were not the case, then what would happen to us if we were no longer able to serve in that role? Many of our roles in life are not permanent and can change quickly, like those defined by the type of work we do or the relationship we’re in. What would happen to us if we ceased to have that occupation or that relationship?

I think that people who can only define who they are by their role in life might be subject to depression if they lose that role because they no longer feel they have purpose. I think purpose is very important to giving our lives meaning, but I don’t believe it must come from the roles we play.If our roles aren’t permanent, what else can give our lives meaning? I think it’s healthy to not define ourselves by our relationships or roles in the physical world because it is impermanent. I believe we should define ourselves by our connection to the spiritual world. Those that only believe in the physical world might say we are nothing more than intelligent animals who live for a few decades and then die, with no further existence.

But I, like a growing number of others, believe that we are spiritual beings having a human experience, that we are all eternal, and that we have the potential for connecting with spirit beings, or whatever name you may choose to call them. I believe they exist on a much higher plane where they can foresee future events much better than you or me and are able to assist us through life’s struggles.

I believe that when you accept this – that you are so much more than you thought you were – you can also realize your great purpose and mission in this life, which is to inspire others and help them to realize their own purpose and potential. I believe that we are all channels for the Light and that once we embrace this concept that our lives can be totally transformed through finding purpose by helping others, because we are all part of one greater whole and helping others is helping ourselves.
